A fence is a symbol of separation. Throughout history it has been a fence that separated society be it physically, geographically or socially. Let’s talk about the topic and theme of Biennale: “How we will live together?” Let’s name it from the very first step. What is it that separates us? What keeps us away from the state that we strive for?

OFF FENCE installation placement manifests the separation phenomenon. We chose to confront. We partition the path. We prompt the visitor to act. We transform the obstacle to an impulse. An impulse of change.

The Pecka Playscape is a unique set of play elements and installations on the boundary between sculpture and folly located at 1062 meters above sea level. The main impulse that initiated this project was to motivate both parents and children to enjoy the outdoors. To spend time in a forest while breathing fresh mountain air and to encourage them to be in contact with natural materials such as wood, water and stone. We designed all the playscape elements so that they are in harmony with the original landscape while keeping it almost intact. The installations were inspired by wildlife inhabiting the Krkonoše mountains.

Since 2014, the DOX Centre has been implementing educational programs that extend beyond contemporary art into social psychology. In addition to artworks, the programs use the insights of psychologists and educators such as Phillip Zimbardo, Carol Dweck and many others. Why? For one thing, contemporary art reflects the world in the broadest sense. And on the other, it can provoke, engage, and play (around). Art and teaching (learning). The exhibition is accompanied by a series of events and educational programmes for schools.

Prior loosely connects observations from neuroscientific disciplines in the practice of designing play installations. The spatial layout is conceived with the targeted intention of stimulating different functions of the human physical and mental apparatus. The combination of optic and haptic sensations in a parallel scenario conveys the visitor, the participant, into an unusual situation. The result of the stimulation is a disruptive reaction, which initiates the organism’s adaptation process. Adaptation is a key mechanism that connects play, learning, and the perception of a work of art. The object is installed in a unique location made accessible for the festival visitors only this year. This autumn commences on the plot construction of a new technology centre designed by Kengo Kuma.

The intention behind the design of the Bororo game system was to bring the atmosphere of an Amazonian tree village closer to child visitors. We did not aim for an exact imitation or reconstruction of a specific pattern of an indigenous hut from the depths of the rainforest. Instead, we extracted characteristic features and situations from the theme that give similar structures a distinct character. Hanging structures, glimpses into the depths, the intricacy of a tree canopy labyrinth, surprising details of masks, and fetishes of unknown rituals. For the child’s perspective, we drew from our own memories and experiences. From this range of elements, we then assembled our version of Bororo. We believe that the resulting expressive expression and strong physical stimulation will leave more room for visitors to initiate their own imagination.
